Chico Mendes: Environmentalist, Unionist, or Visionary? – a paper by Biorn Maybury-Lewis

CIBS co-founder and executive director, Biorn Maybury-Lewis, delivered the paper, below, at the Chico Vive Conference in Washington, D.C., in April 2014, that commemorated the life and struggle of the slain rubber tapper leader, Chico Mendes.  At the conference were indigenous people and grassroots organizers from around the world, all facing assaults on their cultures and the environments that have sustained them as a result of misguided developmentalism.  An earlier version of this paper was the introduction to Gomercindo Rodrigues‘ book, Walking the Forest with Chico Mendes (Linda Rabben, translator).
